Despite what some men-who-have-sex-with-men-unfriendly historians insist, at Q&S we share the belief that Lincoln was sexually fluid: he had a nervous breakdown when the man he lived and shared a bed with got married, and he shared a bed in the White House for about six months with his handsome bodyguard, David Derickson. It was no more normal in the mid-19th century for a heterosexual American president to sleep in the same bed with another man than it would be today. To cap it off, one of Dashing Derickson’s many descendants — he sired ten children — told us that the family believes without doubt that his affair with Lincoln was a fact, and they’re rightly proud of it.

This modified in-memoriam illustration, painted by S.J. Ferris in 1865 shortly after Lincoln was assassinated, might seem like further validation of Lincoln’s sexuality. It’s actually nothing more salacious than a moving expression of the nation’s grief at the time: Entitled “Washington & Lincoln (Apotheosis),” it depicts Washington embracing his spiritual heir, welcoming him to heaven with a hug and a laurel wreath. Aw!
