For those who believe that Lincoln was sexually fluid, that despite what same-sex-unfriendly historians insist it wasn’t at all “normal” in the mid-19th century for a heterosexual American president to share his bed with his handsome bodyguard, David Derickson, this image based on a painting by S.J. Ferris from 1865, just after Lincoln was assassinated, might seem like validation. Entitled “Washington & Lincoln (Apotheosis),” it’s about Washington embracing his spiritual heir, welcoming him to heaven with a hug and a laurel wreath.
Perhaps final word: One of Derickson’s many descendants — he sired ten children — told us that the family takes the affair between Lincoln and their studly ancestor as a fact they’re proud of.
You cannot go wrong gifting a pillow to a scribbler. Let’s just say that some of us pack one of our feather favorites for weekends away from the word factory, two for longer travels — life is miserable without a sofa pillow, too. Naps.
